Second apartment blaze overwhelms Coquitlam fire crews

The Burnaby Fire Department was forced to step up to the plate in Coquitlam as local fire crews had their hands full battling two separate apartment fires on Monday.

Just after 9 p.m., fire broke out at a large condo-type building at 423 Whiting Way in Coquitlam.

Around 30 firefighters from Burnaby were forced to cross the municipal border because the Coquitlam team was already battling a different fire at a Coquitlam Town Centre apartment block.

The earlier fire left an estimated 150 people homeless as a result of damage cause to the structure.

Fire services said the fire on Whiting Way looked like it started in a top-floor suite, but said there were no injuries.

Three Coquitlam firefighters were taken to hospital following the earlier and much larger fire.
