Drunk drivers aren’t the only suspects police catch at roadblocks.
New Westminster Police pulled over a vehicle last Friday and found $29,000 in cash in two plastic baggies. The driver, a 30-year-old man from Coquitlam, said he was unemployed but earned the money from collecting pop cans.
Finding his story unbelievable, police seized the cash and are now investigating to determine if the funds are proceeds from crime.
New Westminster Sgt. Gary Weishaar noted the man would have to recycle 580,000 pop cans to make $29,000.
“That’s really hard to believe,” he said.
New West officers had been operating a CounterAttack roadblock in the 100-block of East Columbia Street when they spotted the suspect vehicle perform a U-turn to avoid the roadblock.
The suspect car was pursued and stopped by police without incident. The responding officer questioned the driver and detected the smell of marijuana. A search of the vehicle did not find drugs but did discover the cash in the centre console.
The driver was later released after questioning. The cash will be held until the investigation is concluded.
