ONLINE FIRST: Scott Young to run for council seat in Port Coquitlam

Port Coquitlam Mayor Scott Young filed his nomination papers Friday afternoon to run for a spot as a city councillor, ending weeks of speculation as to what his intentions were for the Nov. 15 civic election.

Young has had only limited contact with the media since pleading guilty and being sentenced on three criminal charges stemming from an incident with his former girlfriend in April 2007.

But last month he told The Tri-City News he was still considering running and that even a council or school board position was still under consideration.

The mayor also said that he believed voters would see past his legal troubles when going to the polls.

"I think that is in the past," he said. "I am not going to live in the past. I recognize in my private life I have made mistakes and I have taken measures to correct that."
