Andrew Wang, the young pianist representing the Coquitlam District Music Festival at the 2009 National Music Festival in Saskatoon, returned home last week with the top prize.
The 16-year-old Richmond resident won the provincial competition held in Prince Rupert in May and went on the annual national competition in Saskatchewan. The festival of classical music brings together the best students from every province to perform in the top venues in the country and to learn from some of Canada's best adjudicators.
The week-long competition ends with a gala in which the winners of each category — piano, voice, strings, guitar, woodwinds, brass and small ensemble — perform and compete again for the Grand Award.
Wang won both the Grand Award, for which he received $5,000, and took first place in piano.
He currently studies with Dr. Sasha Starcevich and in the past eight years he's won many awards in local, national and international piano competitions.
Thelka Wright of the CDMF said they are "thrilled at [Andrew's] accomplishments and honoured that he represented our local festival."
