Free music in PoCo

Music lovers will hear classic rock and jazz at two free performances in Port Coquitlam next weekend.

On Saturday, Aug. 1, Legal Limit will play at the bandshell next to city hall as part of the summer-long Live @ Leigh Square series. The cover band has been together for 10 years and recently did a gig at the Blue Mountain Music Festival in Coquitlam. The show starts at 1:30 p.m.

And on Sunday, Aug. 2, Jazz Con Brio — a sax, trumpet and guitar trio — will be in Lions Park at 2 p.m. for the city's Music in the Park summer series. Founded in 2007, the ensemble's repertoire is made up of music by Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Paul Desmond and Wes Montgomery.

Jazz Con Brio is Jim Burns (guitar), James Hill (saxophone) and Jerry Boey (trumpet). Burns started playing drums and guitar at 15 and performed in rock bands in upstate New York.

Hill played in swing groups in his teens and became involved in organizing jazz-related programs for about 20 years as a volunteer for the Saskatoon Jazz Society and the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival. Meanwhile, Boey played in small combos in southern Saskatchewan in early teens and with a Dixieland jazz group while in university.
