Visual arts students will be able to sign up for fall classes at Coquitlam's Place des Arts with two new faculty members. Adults who want to brush up on their art skills can join Judi Clark, who is teaching a class called Rejuvenating Art. Clark has a master's degree in education and has taught art therapy. Beginner and novice sculptors can also register with Parvaneh Roudgar, whose spring workshops at the Brunette Avenue centre were sold out. Roudgar honed her craft in Italy at the Artistic Lyceum, the Fine Art Academy of Florence, the Marcello Fantoni Ceramic School and the University of Arts of Eta’ Libera. Meanwhile, long-time Place des Arts' teachers Stan Hunc and Laurie Thomson have new classes for adults this fall. Hunc will instruct new painters in his Painting ABC’s class; his Pen and Ink Drawing class allows students to learn basic techniques or practice existing skills. Thomson has two new sessions: an introductory class for beginners or painters new to the medium and a class on watercolour techniques; Thomson is also leading a Painting and Mixed Media class while Sue Cowan has an acrylic painting class and a drawing course. To sign up, call 604-644-1636 or visit www.placedesarts.ca.
PEOPLE'S CHOICE
The people have chosen a creation by a North Vancouver artist as the winner of this year's Wearable Art Awards. Last week, Elena Gregusova won the People's Choice accolade for her work titled Queen of Queens, a woven sculpture made from recycled newspapers. It was also chosen by the jurors as the Open Category winner at the May 9 and 10 red carpet showings of the 70-plus entries at Port Moody's civic centre. "The literally woven-paper sculpture is one of my objects from my still-growing 'Wear the News' collection," Gregusova said in a news release.
ART CAMPS
Port Coquitlam kids aged seven to 12 can join the city's "Awesome Art Camps" next month. They are "Picture This" for young shutterbugs (Aug. 10 to 14); "Life of Paper" for paper creators (Aug. 24 to 28); and "Dream It Vocal Camp" with singing coach Jan Cooper (Aug. 31 to Sept. 4). As well, for children aged six to 12, there's "Pound, Paste and Mould" with clay and print on fabric (Aug. 17 to 21), which runs Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to noon at The Outlet.
