Women can mentor girls as Big Sisters looks for volunteers

Female volunteer mentors are needed to grow a new Big Sisters program in Coquitlam.
Now in its second year, the Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds program is designed to encourage physical activity and healthy eating choices while creating a positive self-image for girls aged 12 to 14.
The eight-session course is led by volunteer women who are matched with four participants.
The after-school classes are held in four Coquitlam schools and include educational games and activities to stimulate mentor/participant relationship-building as well as self-reflection and group discussions about healthy living and emotional, social and cultural issues.
The program also aims to build leadership and life skills while enhancing self-esteem.
Last year, the pilot program, which is supported by the Coquitlam school board, started with 10 girls and has since expanded with space for 40 participants.
The Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland has been enhancing the confidence, self-esteem and well-being of girls through supportive friendships with women since 1960. Now serving more than 425 girls a year, Big Sisters matches girls, aged seven to 17, with female volunteers in mentoring relationships and provides ongoing support.
