Coquitlam River Watershed Society (CRWS) will be celebrating some milestones when its members meet for the 11th annual general meeting Oct. 23.
Efforts to protect and enhance the river are to be congratulated, according to Sherry Carroll, CRWS president, who named the city of Coquitlam and BC Hydro as contributing partners.
Hydro opened a $65-million replacement dam for one built nearly 100 years ago after two years of construction, which included the development of rearing ponds and a spawning channel as well as a trap where sockeye will be taken to re-stock Coquitlam lake in an experiment to save the heritage species once thought extinct.
The city of Coquitlam was also cited for efforts to work with gravel operators through the Coquitlam River Aggregate Committee and for jointly sponsoring a watershed co-ordinator’s position with CRWS.
“Partnerships are vital in maintaining effective stewardship over our Coquitlam River,” Carroll said in a press release.
The AGM will take place Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. at Pinetree community centre.
CRWS was established in 1997 by environmental activists who wanted to develop a plan to improve the health of the Coquitlam River.
