Focus on fall
Fall-focused paintings will be on display at The Outlet in PoCo’s Leigh Square arts village this weekend as the Art Focus Artist’s Association launches its 14th annual Fall Art Show. The opening reception will be held today (Friday) between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., with the show continuing Saturday and Sunday between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Artists will display works from a variety of media including pastel, watercolour, acrylic, oil and mixed media. FUN & FILM
Grab some popcorn and get ready to laugh. The Port Moody Film Society will be presenting Cosi, an “uproarious” comedy about a group of residents at a psychiatric hospital who stage Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutti. The production is part of the cast’s therapy, however most are heavily medicated, can’t sing and don’t speak Italian. The film starts at 7:30 p.m. and will be screened at the Inlet Theatre (100 Newport Dr.) in Port Moody.
LET’S TALK
For people wanting to learn how to speak English or practise what they already know, the free English Conversation Practice Group may be the place for you. The friendly, welcoming, volunteer-run classes are a great place to meet new friends and share culture with others. Class runs between 12:30 and 2 p.m. and is located at the Share Family and Community Services Society (2615 Clarke St.) in Port Moody. CARR IN COQUITLAM
The works of Emily Carr will be on display at the Evergreen Cultural Centre Art Gallery starting today until the end of November. Titled “We Are Rushing On and On and On” the show features Carr’s work from between 1935 and 1942. The work is accompanied by selected film clips and archival objects giving the viewer a sense of what life was like at the time of the piece’s creation. The exhibition has been curated by Alison Rajah, who is currently completing her MA in critical and curatorial studies at UBC. The show opens today (Friday) and can be seen from Monday to Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call 604-927-6555.

The Coquitlam Aglow Chapter is inviting women 14 years and older to a free breakfast and seminar at the Executive Plaza Hotel (405 North Rd.) in Coquitlam. OLDIES BUT GOODIES

HOCKEY DAY IN COQUITLAM
Puck chasers 11 years and up are invited to participate in a friendly ball hockey drop-in match at the Centennial activity centre (570 Poirier St.). Hockey sticks and equipment will be supplied and the cost of admission is $3.55. The game will be played between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
