Students of all ages received some help recently with two grants the Van Tel/Safeway Credit Union Foundation made to Douglas College. The Foundation donated $2,500 to be used for environmental workshops at elementary schools and for community groups that focus on protecting habitats for birds and bats. The workshops are delivered by the Institute of Urban Ecology at Douglas College. An additional $2,500 went to Douglas College Foundation to provide bursaries for students enrolled in the Youth Justice Degree program. HOSPITAL HELPERS

The Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation has some new faces. The foundation’s newest board members are Alison Johansen, who comes from a sales and marketing background with 12 years of entrepreneurial experience, and Kelly Hobbis, a registered nurse for 23 years before joining her husband in their family business. As well, four people were recently re-elected to the board of directors for a two-year term of office: Shabir Amarshi, Daniel Chui, Wayne Tanaka and Larry Wald. And Nasreen Gulamhusein is the foundation’s new communications and marketing specialist.

BUILDING SUCCESS

The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association (GVHBA) presented its annual Association Awards of Excellence Wednesday at the Executive Plaza Hotel in Coquitlam and Coquitlam had four winners. Dale Barron of Morningstar Homes Ltd. was given the Presidential Award of Honour while Daine Halley of Comet Interior Design was named Renovation Council Member of the Year; and the BuiltGreen BC Member of the Year (single-detached) was Morningstar Homes Ltd. Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association is comprised of 714 companies representing developers, builders, renovators, sub-trades, suppliers, manufacturers and other professionals. As well, members of the GVHBA elected their board members for 2008/’09, including Morningstar’s Barron.

DIRECT GIVE

DirectBuy recently held a fundraiser for Share Family and Community Services Society. The fundraiser consisted of several activities held at the company’s Coquitlam showroom, including an auction of donated items from DirectBuy vendors, a 50-50 raffle, a barbecue and a collection of canned food items. All proceeds — $1,800 — and donated food items went directly to Share.

EXCELLENT EXPORTERS

Two Tri-City businesses were honoured as Ida Chong, B.C.’s minister of technology, trade and economic development, and Craig Williams, vice-president, B.C. division, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME), announced BC’s Top 25 Exporters for 2008. The awards are open to all B.C. companies that have been exporting a product or service for two or more years. In the category Primary Products and Services, SPF Precut Lumber of Port Moody was honoured while, in the category Professional and Services, Synergy Engineering Ltd. of Coquitlam was named.
