Dumping large loads of garbage is about to get more expensive.
Metro Vancouver will boost its tipping fee from $71 to $82 per tonne on waste dropped at local transfer stations on Jan. 1.
The 15 per cent increase, approved by Metro's board when it passed the 2010 budget in October, is to recover more of the rising costs of waste handling.
Metro's tipping fee for green waste – tree branches, grass clippings and the like – rises $3 to $59 per tonne. The lower charge gives residents an incentive to separate yard and garden waste from garbage.
The regional district already increased tipping fees for small loads of waste back in July.
Amounts less than 140 kilograms are charged a minimum $10, which rises to $20 at the Coquitlam, North Shore and Surrey transfer stations during peak periods of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays.
Small loads of green waste are charged $6.
