A Coquitlam resident will pay a hefty fine and serve a conditional sentence for GST fraud.

Amirali Hasham Jamal pleaded guilty on July 27 and was sentenced Monday in provincial court in Vancouver. According to a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) press release, he'll pay a fine of $272,655, the full amount of GST refunds he obtained fraudulently, and serve a two-year conditional sentence under house arrest.

The CRA investigation revealed Jamal ran a rental car business in the 1990s. Several companies, all controlled by Jamal, were used to operate the business. By 2000, however, the companies were no longer operating while Jamal continued to file fraudulent GST returns until August 2003.

When individuals are convicted of tax fraud, they must repay the amount received fraudulently, plus interest. The court may also fine them up to 200% of the refund sought and impose a jail term of up to two years.
