The Pitt Meadows Secondary School Marauders varsity football team’s post-season run came to an end Friday night much in the same way it did last season, with a loss to the Windsor Dukes.
The Marauders fell to last season’s AA junior varsity provincial champion by a score of 35-7, under the lights at McLeod Athletic Park in Langley in the first round of the 2009 B.C. High School Football Association play-offs.
The Marauders had trouble holding on to the ball in the sub-zero conditions, fumbling the ball six times in the first half, twice for turnovers. The Marauders only first down of the first half came on a botched punt attempt, as Malcolm Williams elected to run the ball after corralling the skyward snap.
While Pitt’s defense was able to stop a number of forays by Windsor deep into their territory, twice forcing a turnover on downs. However, the Dukes running game proved too much for the Marauders, as Windsor quarterback Marcus Acaster ran for three touchdowns.
The Marauders took a 21-0 deficit into the break at half time. Pitt was able to get on the board in the second half, but it was too little, too late as the Dukes pulled out their third victory over the Marauders in three meetings stretching back to last season.
Injuries and penalties didn’t help the Marauders chances either.
Running back Cody Holleran was injured in the first half, while Pitt continually afforded the Dukes strong field position with a near constant stream of yellow flags.
With the win, Windsor advances to the second round of the play-offs, where they will face the top-ranked Seaquam Seahawks next week.
While the Marauders 2009 campaign may be over, there will be plenty of familiar faces on Pitt Meadows’ AA Varsity squad next season. With the majority of the team currently in Grade 11, Marauders head coach Dave Holleran expects nearly all of his starters to return for one last attempt at a provincial title in their senior year.
