The Grade 8 Pitt Meadows Marauders football team started its regular season off on the right foot at home Tuesday, eking out an 8-6 come from behind win against the Maple Creek Hawks.
With both teams scoreless at the half, the Hawks took the lead late in the third quarter with a touchdown to make the score 6-0.
Despite taking a string of penalties, quarterback Jacob Gowler and halfback Kurtis Blaine led the ground attack for the Marauders, scoring a touchdown in the final minute of regulation.
With the score tied 6-6, the Marauders gambled on a two-point convert, with Gowler and Chris McCarten hooking up for the game-winning score.
“It was incredible,” said coach Curt Gowler. “It was back and forth all game.”
It was the first-ever win for the fledgling team, who went 0-3 in the preseason.
“It was a hard fought game and Maple Creek seemed to always have an edge,” said Pitt Meadows Athletics Director Rich Goulet.
“This marks the first Grade 8 win in the school’s history and it’s a great benchmark for the ever improving Marauder Grade 8 boys’ football team.”
The Grade 8 Marauders next game is next Tuesday on the road against Hugh Boyd.
The team’s next home game is Tuesday, Nov. 3, versus the Seaquam Seahawks at 3:15 p.m.
