Former Ridge Meadows Flames hockey player Kellan Tochkin turned heads in his debut in a Canucks uniform Wednesday night.
The Abbotsford-born forward had a pair of goals in the Canucks prospects 4-3 win over the University of Alberta Golden Bears in Edmonton, including the game-winner.
The 5-foot-10, 176-pound right winger went unclaimed at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in late June this but was signed by the Canucks as a free agent in July.
“Walking into the dressing room and seeing my name on the back of the jersey is something I’ll remember for the rest of my life,” said Tochkin after the game. “At Christmas, I went to a couple of Canucks games. I was at Trevor Linden night, just there as a fan, and now I’m part of the organization.
“It’s very, very weird.”
Tochkin was paired with former Vancouver Giant Mario Bliznak and Pierre-Cedric Labrie on the Canucks’ second line. The win gave the Canucks prospects a 1-0 record in their three-game mini-tournament in Alberta.
Tochkin, 18, recorded 74 points (20-54-74) in 72 games with the Everett Silvertips in 2008-09 to lead WHL rookies, as well as 59 points (24 goals, 35 assists) in 32 games with the Ridge Meadows Flames in 2007/08.
