The Ridge Meadows Renegades U-12 ball hockey team returned from Calgary this month with gold medals draped around their necks after winning the Western Challenge Cup.

The team went 5-1 in the round robin, scoring an average of more than four goals per game. That put the Renegades in the finals against rival Delta Selects.

With solid goaltending by Tristan Slavin, who finished the tourney with a 0.86 goals-against, and superb defense by Austin Hickel, Cody Small, Lucas Campbell, Justin Acheson, Gurman Grewal and Brady Surbey, the majority of the play was held in the Delta end.

Jonathan Weloy and Daniel Bruce scored for the Renegades, leading the team to a 2-1 win that saw them out-shoot the selects 40 to 12.

Other team members included Halen Cordoni, Riley Witt, Christopher Auger, Matt Van Dregt, John Golubic, Dean Mattson, Devon Rackow, Dylan Hopper.

The Renegades were one of four teams the Ridge Meadows Minor Ball Hockey Association sent to the tournament.
