Just how dedicated are the members of the Valley Vintage Rugby Club?
Consider this: on some Wednesday nights when the club trains, there are up to eight members — all above 60 years old — all out on a training run.
“It is competitive in that we govern ourselves by the regular laws of rugby, not a watered down version as practised in other jurisdictions,” said Gary Fullerton, one of the club’s members.
The Valley Vintage, in an effort to attract more players, is lowering its age restriction to 37 for new members. The previous age requirement was 40-plus.
The club plays out of the Langley Rugby Club’s facilities practising on Wednesday evenings and then playing games on Sunday afternoons.
The club is appealing to any interested players living between Richmond and Langley to join up, including over-agers from Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge.
The season begins in early September and runs until the end of April. The season breaks from mid-December to February.
The club has been around since 1978, founded by the late Colin James Rugby Stewart, who also founded the LRC and the Langley Cricket club.
Currently, the Valley Vintage has 25 members, ranging in age from 40 to 67.
The majority of the club’s players do have a rugby background, although Fullerton said that some members came to the club with no experience but have picked up the game quite nicely.
The club is also in the works for a trip to Spain this March.
