Maple Ridge’s Njideka Obioha turned heads at the B.C. Youth Track and Field Championships in Abbotsford last weekend, winning a total of four gold medals. The Golden Ears Athletics track club member took the top spot in the 100-metre, 200-metre, long jump and triple jump events.
In the triple jump, Obioha’s distance of 11.58 metres set a new B.C. record for 15-year-olds.
Her performances in the 100-metre (12.18 seconds), 200-metre (25.79 seconds), and long jump (5.44 metres) were among the top 10 performances ever recorded in B.C. by a 15-year-old female athlete, establishing her as one of the top youth female athletes in the country.
Obioha will be headed to Sherbrooke, Quebec in August as part of the B.C. youth team competing in the National Legion Championships.
Other athletes from the Eagles Track Club earning medals at the provincial youth championships were Jacob Karamanian, who won bronze medals in shot put (10.72 metres) and high jump (1.65 metres), and Leah Regan, who won a bronze medal in the 3,000-metre event (10:55.30).
