Sports shorts X-treme shut out Mariners

The U-21 womens’ Golden Ears X-treme started a three-game home stand in style beating the Abbotsford U-21 Mariners 2-0 on Sunday at Samuel Robertson Technical field. Play was even throughout the first half as each team tested the others’ defense and goaltending. The X-treme, playing without their regular keeper, were encouraged by the stops made by fill-in Morgon Meys.

The game remained scoreless until the 20-minute mark of the second half when Megan Carriere and Allie Stoyeff broke across the midfield stripe. One final pass by Stoyeff put the ball on the foot of Carriere who made sure the ball found the back of the net. The Mariners pressed hard to tie the game in the final eight minutes, but Kaleigh Storer took the ball down the other end and scored for the X-treme.

In net, Meys gobbled up any errant ball that entered her territory and stopped the attack of the Mariners on numerous occasions. Julie Ius gave the Mariners fits all game with her tenacious work at midfield, while sweeper Katelyn Lovestead did the same on defense.

The win put the X-treme into a tie for second place in the U-21 Gold division. The X-treme have Thanksgiving weekend off before returning to the field on Oct 19.

Chargers dismantle Metro Ford

The Golden Ears United U-16 Chargers boys’ soccer squad over-powered Metro Ford with a 3-1 victory over the weekend. The Chargers showed moments of brilliance shown with their one touch passing, resulting in goals by Mike Hicks, Adrian DiFrancesco and Devon Warren. Man of the match honours were awarded to Devon Warren.
