The Ridge Meadows Flames snapped a five-game losing streak Saturday night, coming back against the North Delta Devils to win 4-3 on the road.
“I thought we played exceptionally well,” said coach Russ Weber. “We battled back in the second and played some good defensive hockey in the third.”
The Flames jumped out to a 2-0 midway through the first thanks to a pair of goals by rookie forward Dustin Cervo.
However, undisciplined penalties late in the period allowed the Devils to take a 3-2 lead going into the first intermission. The line of Kevyn Kirbyson, Ryan Stanimir and Brett Allen combined for two goals in the second period to give the Flames the lead, and a strong performance by the team’s defensive corps and some clutch goaltending by Evan Dauenhauer in the third helped secure the win.
It was the first win for the Flames since Sept. 7
“If that’s an indication that this team has turned a corner, that’s great,” said Weber. “But I think the jury’s still out on that one.”
The win came after a 3-1 loss to the fist-place Richmond Sockeyes at home on Friday. The Flames were out shot 42-17 in that outing, earning Dauenhauer second star honours in his first appearance for the Flames.
The former Port Moody netminder was picked up in a trade to bolster the team’s depth in goal, and will replace rookie goalie Tyler Klassen on the roster.
“Evan is at a different level in his development than Tyler, and we need that right now, “ said Weber. “[Klassen] needs to be playing more and we can’t give him that.
I hope he is playing for us next year.”
The Flames now sit with a 3-6 record this season, but have yet to win at home, something Weber hopes to change this Friday when the team takes on the Port Moody Black Panthers at Planet Ice.
The last time the two teams met resulted in 12-4 drubbing of the Flames at home, and Weber says his team is hungry for revenge.
“Dauenhauer will obviously be starting in net against his old team,” he said.
Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
