Bureaucrats laughing, rolling their eyes?

Editor, The News:

I would like to respond to the letter of B. Butler about municipal tax bills, (Letters Nov. 4)

You make some good points. I recall a time back in the 1960s when my father was a municipal councillor for the District of Coquitlam.

They would sooner give up their jobs, (as volunteers) before they would consider raising taxes. It was sacrilegious.

Not so much today.

As concerned citizens we are encouraged to write letters to the editor, call our local councillor or mayor to express our displeasure.

Well, if you do, you get some hollow platitudes and false sympathy as they talk down to us.

Further, the bureaucrats who do read these letters roll their eyes and laugh about it at the water cooler amongst other bureaucrats. I know because I have watched it time and again. They care not what the taxpayer is saying as long as there is no possible way to get at their paycheques or pensions.

There is going to come a day, soon, (as U.S. President Barack Obama has shown us), when government will say to those in government who have no collective agreement, we are going to take back all of your earnings over a certain amount. In the case of Obama, it is $200,000.

Guess what, the people love the idea. Hopefully, there will be a means test for bureaucrats who retire and everything they have in excess of $200,000 in value will be taken away.

Wait, isn’t that what they are doing to all of us now by way of all sorts of taxes, fees, levies and charges?

Except with us, there is no threshold. They don’t care if you are on a fixed income.

They don’t care if you are disabled.

They don’t even care if the taxes put people out on the street to burn to death trying to keep warm on a cold winter night.
