Firefighters are cooling down neighbourhoods

Maple Ridge firefighters are helping people beat the heat this summer by spraying their hoses and sprinklers on local streets, for fun and little bit more.

The Hot Summer Nights program has been running in Maple Ridge for many years.

“It’s a very, very popular and long sought-after program,” said chief Howard Exner.

On Thursday night, the crew took one of the fire trucks to the corner of Alpha and 117 streets to show people their equipment and offer fire safety information and demonstrations while the kids ran through the spray.

A fun event for the whole neighbourhood, Exner said it is a good way to educate the public about fire safety and also allows parents and kids to meet local fire fighters.

Upcoming dates for Hot Summer Nights: Aug. 6, Eric Langton elementary; Aug. 13 at 110 Avenue and 238 Street; Aug. 20, Alouette elementary.

The Pitt Meadows fire department also runs a Hot Summer Nights program, but only by reservation.

To schedule an evening for a fire crew to come to their street, Pitt Meadows residents can sign up through the department website, www.pittmeadowsfire.com.

Hot Summer Nights runs until the end of August and is free to all residents of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows.
