A fire at a home on Chestnut Crescent in Pitt Meadows is being investigated by both fire and police after crews discovered a marijuana grow-operation inside.

Just after 2 a.m. on Saturday, Pitt Meadows firefighters responded to a residential fire. It started in the area of the exterior hydro meter and quickly extended up the side of the house and into the roof.

"Due to some suspicious activity in the house, members were withdrawn and it was strictly a defensive fire from that point," said assistant fire chief Rob Chatton.

Ridge Meadows RCMP seized about 400 plants from the residence and are still investigating.

The fire caused damage to that home, as well as some cosmetic damage to the side of a neighbouring residence.

"We were there for close to six hours with several pieces of apparatus and approximately 26 firefighters," said Chatton.

Nobody was inside the home when the fire began.
