Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue is being credited in helping to find two young hikers who got lost near Widgeon Lake in Coquitlam.

The two young adults left Monday for a camping trip around Widgeon Lake, but when they didn’t return Wednesday night, search teams were called.

“They were able to get a text message out to friend which essentially said, ‘We’re stuck between Widgeon Lake and Pitt Lake,’” said Rick Laing, manager for Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue.

Laing said they received a call around 9 p.m. Wednesday night about the two hikers, but the information was passed on to Coquitlam Search and Rescue.

Early yesterday morning though, Ridge Meadows teams were called to assist in the search.

“[Wednesday] night, the RCMP phoned up and said their helicopter had spotted a tent in the bush, but they were unable to ascertain whether that was them or not. And ground teams couldn’t find the site,” said Laing.

But during a fly-over of the same campsite yesterday morning, the helicopter spotted the two hikers “flailing their arms madly.”

Laing said the pair was in good condition.
