Have fun, get messy, and make pottery

The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Arts Council is offering a number of pottery courses this summer for kids and adults to get familiar with the pottery world, and to take home their own original and functional pieces.
Three summer programs – Pottery Camp, Wheel Throwing, and Kids on the Wheel – will give beginner and intermediate potters the chance to either hone their skills or get their first experience behind the wheel.
“We really have fun in the classes,” said Maria Palotas, instructor for the latter two classes.
Wheel Throwing is a program for students 16 and older who want to pick up some experience at the potters wheel.
Kids on the Wheel will give the younger students, aged 11 to 15, the chance to gain some skills sitting at the wheel.
Pottery Camp, which is led by instructor Josie Stead, is open to children ages six to 13 and will allow them to create hand-built pottery.
Palotas said students young and old will be able to finish anywhere between five and 30 original pieces over the course of the program.
“I challenge them to make more complicated forms, like teapots. More things that you have to assemble,” she said “I always challenge my students, kids too, because they want to learn, they want to have fun.”
Palotas said that even beginners will quickly see how enjoyable it is to work with the clay, and taking a pottery course gives students a greater appreciation for their own skills – by creating functional pieces – and for the earthenware they use daily.
“Taking this course, they’ll learn something different, very different,” she said. “They’ll learn how to make mugs and plates. They will appreciate how it’s made.”
Two Pottery Camps will be held daily beginning July 13 and July 20.
The camp (held from either 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., or 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) costs $75 for five sessions.
The Kids on the Wheel pottery course will begin July 20 at 1:30 p.m., and costs $86 for five sessions.
The Wheel Throwing for beginners and intermediates class begins July 6 at 1:30 p.m., and costs $117 for six sessions.
