Foster homes needed for sick SPCA cats

Temporary homes are needed for sick cats at the Maple Ridge SPCA shelter.
The shelter’s isolation room is currently full and foster care is required for 10 adult cats being treated for upper respiratory infection, which is similar to the common cold or flu.
“It’s a seasonal problem that we get in the shelter,” said branch manager Mark Vosper.
“As soon as one comes in with the symptoms, then the rest of them catch it easier. When you have them together in one area, it kind of compounds the problem. The virus just keeps circulating.”
When cats are away from the stress of the shelter and receive one-on-one attention, they recover a lot faster, he added.
Foster care is expected for at least two weeks. Many of the cats are also on medication, which will need to be properly administered daily.
