Nanaimo’s Townsite neighbourhood is going to bat for Const. Kim Irwin and her efforts for the Cops for Cancer Tour de Rock.
Irwin, an RCMP auxiliary constable, and Const. Emma Rutledge of the Nanaimo detachment, are part of a team of 23 riders cycling more than 1,000 kilometres on Vancouver Island Sept. 19 to Oct. 2 to raise funds for Camp Goodtimes, a summer recreation program run by the Canadian Cancer Society for kids and teens with cancer.
The Townsite family fundraiser takes place Saturday (Aug. 29) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Townsite Grocery, 625 Townsite Rd.
The day includes bouncy castles, games for kids, balloons, burgers and hotdogs, a root beer drinking contest and Dunk-a-Cop dunk tank.
There will be hair colouring for kids by Heritage Hair, weave a gift with Saori Weaving (supported by Canadian Mental Health Association) and sample foods by Friends Dining Lounge.
All proceeds go to support Irwin’s fundraising efforts for Tour de Rock. She will be riding for two friends who died last year from cancer-related illnesses.
Black Press has joined on as one of the sponsors this year, along with Thrifty Foods, ‘A’ Television B.C., Kool 107.3 FM, CFAX 1070 and Vancouver Island Consumer Co-op. Coast Capital Savings is the title sponsor.
