Injuries slow Kwantlen

They got their first win of the season Friday night, but the price they paid cost the Kwantlen Eagles a sweep of their B.C. Colleges Athletic Association (BCCAA) weekend series with the Camosun Chargers.
Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s men’s basketball team posted an impressive 86-67 victory Friday night in Victoria, but were plagued by injuries in the rematch Saturday and lost 64-63.
“We just can’t get a break on the injury front,” said Eagles head coach Bernie Love. “I’m not trying to make excuses, but when two of your best players are hurt, its tough. This league is tough enough without losing players of their calibre.”
Seaquam Secondary graduate Dustin Egelstad had a huge game Friday, scoring 34 points. But he rolled his left ankle late in the game, and the injury affected his played Saturday.
In addition, six-foot-five forward Mike Davis sustained a badly bruised right hip when he took a tumble early in the game, and the Semiahmoo Secondary graduate wasn’t at 100 per cent the rest of the weekend.
“Mike and Dustin played injured and you could really see the difference, especially in Dustin,” said Love. “He couldn’t explode to the hoop and put the ball on the floor the way he could the night before. They had no answer for him Friday night.”
Kevin Kokoska had a solid outing in Friday’s win, netting 19 points.
Shooting was also a factor in Saturday’s loss. After hitting 52 per cent of their shots Friday, they shot just 31 per cent from the floor in the second game. Doug Meyers was the top Eagles scorer with 15 points.
Kwantlen’s women’s team also split their weekend series in Victoria, opening with a 58-52 victory Friday night, scoring 42 points after the halftime break.
“It was the tale of two games,” said head coach Gary Pawluk. “We made changes at half-time and adjusted to Camosun’s press and started to play better.”
Fleetwood Park graduate Taminder Dhaliwal was the top scorer, with Jessica Williams contributing a strong all around effort. But the defence let up Saturday, and Kwantlen lost 68-58.
“Defensively, we didn’t get the job done,” said Pawluk. “Our intensity level wasn’t there.”
Both Kwantlen teams finish the weekend with 1-3 (won-loss) records, and will be in Abbotsford this weekend for games tonight (Friday) and tomorrow against the Columbia Bible College Bearcats. The women tip-off at 6 p.m. both night’s, with the men following at 8 p.m.
