Eagles win a pair on the road

The Surrey Eagles added two more wins to their record last weekend, and picked up a single point in a third game, increasing their stranglehold on first place in the BC Hockey League’s Coastal Conference.
The Birds began a three-game coastal road trip with a 4-1 win over the Powell River Kings Thursday, and made it two in a row Friday night in Lake Cowichan, edging the hometown Capitals 4-3.
The trip ended on a low note Saturday night in Port Alberni, however, with a 5-4 overtime loss. It was the Eagles’ second loss to the Bulldogs – who sit third in the conference – in eight days.
“You can’t complain when you get five out of six points on the road, especially when you’re playing three games in three nights,” Eagles coach Shane Kuss said.
“I thought the guys really played well.”
With a 17-7-0-2 (won-loss-tied-overtime loss) record, the Eagles now sit with 36 points, and have a six-point cushion atop the Coastal Conference. The Kings are still in second place, despite Friday’s loss.
On Thursday, the Eagles got three points from Chris Santiago and 27 saves from goaltender Vinny Lessard to power past Powell River.
Neither team potted a goal in the opening frame, but Santiago and defenceman Neil Blunden, the latter on the power-play, scored for Surrey in the second period.
Paul Levarsky and Brad McGowan added insurance goals in the third to give the visitors a 4-0 edge until Powell River’s Andrew Pettit beat Lessard on the power-play, with less than five minutes to go.
Santiago finished with a goal and two helpers, while Levarsky and McGowan each had two points.
The win exacted a certain measure of revenge for the Birds; it was the Kings who, two weeks ago, ended the Eagles’ nine-game winning streak with a 4-1 win.
Lessard was on the top of his game Friday, as well, making 29 saves against the Caps. On Saturday, despite the five goals against, the second-year puckstopper made 41 saves.
“He was solid, and did a great job in all three games. We’ll need him to continue to do that for us,” Kuss said.
Veteran forward Grant Toulmin was also his usual consistent self, tallying points in all three contests. The 20-year-old Langley native is second in team scoring with 25 points in 26 games.
On Saturday night against the Bulldogs, the penalty kill was the Eagle’s undoing. The Peninsula squad gave up three power-play goals on nine chances, including a third-period marker that gave the home team the lead until Surrey rookie Jamus Lane tied the contest at the 11:33 mark.
Bulldog’s David Dziurzynski scored an unassisted marker in the second overtime frame to send the Eagles home with the loss.
Surrey is back on home ice Wednesday for an afternoon Remembrance Day tilt against the Nanaimo Clippers.
Game time is 2 p.m., and a pre-game ceremony honouring war veterans precedes the opening puck drop.
