Yet another shootout win has added another page in the history book of Kwantlen Polytechnic University athletics.

The Kwantlen Eagles outscored Francois-Xavier Garneau College 4-3 in penalty kicks, after the two sides played to a scoreless tie in the bronze medal game at the Canadian Colleges' Athletic Association women's soccer national championship tournament Saturday afternoon in Vaughn, Ontario.

Kwantlen won two of three games at the six-day, four-day tournament, both victories coming in the shootout. The Eagles qualified for the nationals by winning all three games at the provincial tournament last month, each triumph in a shootout.

The B.C. championship was the first-ever in the history of Kwantlen athletics.

"We've been through a lot as a team and I'm so proud of how far we've come," said team captain Brittany McNeill of North Delta. "To win the bronze medal at our first nationals is a testament to how hard our team has worked. Although we took the longest and hardest route, we gave it our all until the end."

The Eagles opened the tournament with a 1-0 shootout win over the host Humber Hawks Wednesday. After an off day, Kwantlen fell 2-1 to the Concordia Thunder of Alberta Friday afternoon, a result which left the Eagles in second place in their three-team group.

Taylor Sarchet, a first-year midfielder from Tamanawis Secondary, netted the Eagles goal against Concordia on a penalty kick.

In Saturday's contest against Francois-Xavier Garneau College of Quebec, Eagles forward Kelsey Docherty of Vancouver was named player of the match for Kwantlen, while netminder Amelia Ng of Richmond was rewarded with her second shut-out performance of the tournament, and her fifth in six post-season matches.

"This is the toughest teams mentally that I have ever coached, and it shows in the result," said head coach Vladimir Samozvanov. "We have 11 rookies, so it is a huge step up to complete against national level players. And they didn't panic, they maintained their composure and played as a team. It was a great game."

Sarchet and Ng were named to the tournament all-star team.
