After 15 consecutive games of earning at least a point, the North Delta Devils came out of Saturday night’s Pacific International Junior Hockey League game with nothing.
A 5-4 loss to the Grandview Steelers in the Sungod Arena was just the second in regulation time this season for the Devils, and also knocked the Junior B team from first place in the Tom Shaw Conference.
North Delta, 7-4 winners over the Abbotsford Pilots in Abbotsford Friday night, are now 13-2-2 (won-loss-overtime loss). They trail the 14-4-2 Richmond Sockeyes by two points, but have played three fewer games.
The Devils outshot Grandview in every period, but played catch-up for most of the night. After Michael Nardi put the home side ahead just 14 seconds into the game, North Delta trailed 3-1 after 20 minutes and were down 4-2 midway through the game. Mike Wilson and Julius Ho tallied late in the session to send the teams into the third period tied 4-4.
But the Steelers got the only goal with 13 minutes to play, and earned a win that pulled them to within three points of the Devils in a tight three-way race for top spot in the conference.
Bryan Son also scored for North Delta Saturday, with Sam Vikich collecting three assists.
The Devils built up a three-goal lead Friday in Abbotsford, then watched it evaporate in a six-minute span. Then despite getting outshot 13-7 in the final 20 minutes, North Delta netted three unanswered goals to break a 4-4 tie.
Ho and Mason Malkowich each tallied twice for the Devils, with Jackson Hewitt, Vikich and Lee adding one each. Nardi and Trevor Kang earned three assists each.
The Devils play twice on the road next weekend, visiting the Port Moody Black Panthers Saturday night, then facing off against the Steelers in a rematch Sunday afternoon in Burnaby.
