A pair of victories over the Fraser Valley Bruins has vaulted the Valley West Hawks back into the playoff race in B.C. Hockey’s Major Midget League (MML).

The Hawks edged Fraser Valley 5-3 Saturday night in Abbotsford, then hammered the home side 8-0 Sunday morning in Chilliwack.

The weekend sweep improved Valley West’s record to 6-8-0 (won-lost-tied), four points back of the 7-5-2 Vancouver Canadians. The Hawks are idle next weekend, but host the Canadians for two games Nov. 14-15.

Valley West took it to the home team in the opening period Saturday, then hung on for the victory.

South Surrey skaters Mason Blacklock, Daniel Lee and Michael Stenerson tallied in the first period, as did Langley’s Braeden Monk for a 4-0 cushion.

The Hawks were hanging on in the second period, as penalty trouble allowed Fraser Valley to net a pair of goals to cut the difference in half, then the Bruins added a third goal with the Hawks shorthanded to pull to within 4-3 with 12 minutes to play.

Surrey’s Kirk Thompson made some outstanding saves late in the game to keep Valley West in Front, before Brock Wellicome scored into the empty net to clinch the win.

The Hawks started slowly Sunday morning in Chilliwack, but still led 1-0 after one on a goal from Lee. Affiliate players Tyler Basham and Ryan Veillet tallied in the middle frame, as did Blacklock, Stenerson and Langley’s Kyle Becker for a 6-0 lead.

A third affiliate player, Kevin Quinn, and Surrey’s Wellicome completed the scoring in the third period.

Austin Vetterl had a huge game, as the Surrey forward finished with four assists.

Hawks netminder Derek Dun of South Surrey had to work for the shutout, making 30 saves.
