A half dozen players from Surrey helped Team B.C. bring home some hardware from the 2009 Bantam Girls Championship in Toronto on the weekend.

Shortstop Nikki Boyd, outfielder Faythe Lou, first base Sydney Elrick and pitchers Maryse Garcia, Jackie Smith and Amanda Mussio were on the team that opened tournament play by logging a convincing 10-0 win against Nova Scotia Friday morning. The squad of 13- to 16-year olds then lost their next game to Ontario 9-4 the same day.

Saturday the team came back strong, blanking Alberta 9-0, beating Ontario 4-3 and defeating Quebec 13-9.

The streak would send them to the gold medal game Sunday, pitting them against Quebec once again. The opponents were strong, however, leaving B.C. in a 7-5 deficit and sending them home with a silver medal. Smith and Garcia contributed a run apiece in the loss.
