Surrey North Delta Leader

Winning combo at Canada Games

Delta’s Paige Collings wasn’t expecting to compete at the Canada Summer Games.

Team BC is glad she did.

The Delta native was a last-minute addition to the 16-player women’s softball team competing in Prince Edward Island, and the 19-year-old product of the Delta Heat rep program proved to be the difference in the gold medal game.

Collings belted a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie and lifted British Columbia to a 2-1 win over Ontario in the championship game Saturday.

Courtney Cronin of North Delta was the winning pitcher in the final, allowing just one run on three hits over five innings, striking out five Ontario batters.

Shaking off a 2-1 loss to Ontario in the final round robin game – which left Ontario in first place with a perfect 9-0, a game ahead of the eventual gold medalists – Team B.C. defeated their rivals twice in the playoff round. Cronin got the shutout in a 3-0 victory to start the medal round, pitching all seven innings while striking out nine batters.

Other local players on the team included Alyssa Derksen, Lindsay McElroy and Andrea Stevens of North Delta, and Surrey’s Marina Groenewegen and Kelsey Bryant. Among the coaching staff were Surrey residents Kim Rossiter, Sandi Osbrone and Justine McCausland.

Many other local athletes were on teams vying for medals at the Canada Summer Games, which wrapped up its first week of competition Sunday.

• Team B.C. lost two of its final three games of the women’s basketball tournament, but still earned a silver medal. With South Surrey residents Sarah Allison and Sally Hillier on the team, B.C. dropped it’s final round robin game 71-60 to Alberta, leaving them in second place in their group after the round robin. B.C. then upset Quebec 69-49 in semifinal play, before dropping a 79-71 decision to Alberta in the gold medal game Saturday.

• B.C. lost a pair of playoff games in the men’s basketball competition, just missing the medal podium with a fourth place finish. Quebec topped B.C. 99-74 in the semifinal round Thursday, with South Surrey’s Ken Barker contributing to the B.C. effort with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Barker has nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds in an 86-81 loss to Ontario in the bronze medal game Friday.

• A pair of coaches from Surrey helped the Team B.C. beach volleyball squads produce a pair of medals. Michael Gilray was a coach with the women’s team which won gold, while Kyra Iannone coached the men’s team to a bronze medal.

• Their only loss of the week cost the B.C. rugby team a gold medal. B.C. dominated every opponent except Ontario, outscoring the opposition 131-6 in three round robin games before playing Ontario to a 7-7 tie. In the playoffs, B.C. defeated Manitoba 5-0 in a quarterfinal contest, then hammered Alberta 70-0 in the semifinal. But Ontario won the gold medal match 24-15.

Returning to Surrey with silver medals are Team B.C. members Conner Dickie of Elgin Park Secondary, and Cole Coventry, Keaton Styles and Hayden McMullin of Earl Marriott Secondary.

• Jenna Richardson of South Surrey scored the only goal in the women’s soccer gold medal game, lifting Team B.C. to a 1-0 win over Quebec. B.C. won all five games at the tournament, outscoring the opposition 11-3.

Richardson finished the tournament with five goals, with Surrey’s Natalie Boyd and Tessa Meyer scoring once each. Also part of the gold medal team were North Delta’s Jenna Di Nunzio, and Nicole Ambrose, Jennifer Castillo, Gurveen Clair, Nicole Setterlund and Katie Turney of Surrey.
