Locals prominent on provincial team

Seven local athletes were among the 20 players on Team B.C., which won the Canada Cup baseball tournament Aug. 5-9 in Kindersley, Saskatchewan.

Justin Atkinson, Chris Fischer, and Adam Quan of the B.C. Premier Baseball League’s Fraser Valley Chiefs, Surrey resident Mike Ellis of the Langley Blaze, Sullivan Heights Secondary’s Milan Mantle and Tamanawis Secondary student Jerod Bartnik of the White Rock Tritons, and Tyson Popoff of the North Delta Blue Jays were members of the B.C. squad which won seven of eight games played over the five-day tournament. B.C. edged Quebec 7-6 in the championship game.

The Canada Cup tournament featured 10 provincial teams with high school-aged players.
