Islanders eliminate Rebels
The Surrey Rebels were upset 10-5 by the Delta Islanders, and have been eliminated from the B.C. Intermediate B Lacrosse League playoffs.
The Rebels cruised to a second place finish in the South Conference of the league, winning 11 of 18 games. But the Islanders, the conference’s fourth place team with just five victories, dominated the last half of the sudden-death playoff game and brought Surrey’s season to an abrupt end.
Delta tallied seven times on the powerplay Tuesday night in the Cloverdale Arena, and netted another pair while shorthanded.
Surrey led 2-1 late in the opening period, but gave up a tying goal with just four seconds to play.
The Rebels did erase a two-goal deficit by the midway point of the second period, but trailed 7-4 after 40 minutes and never recovered.
Brodie Serka with two goals, Max Richards, Derek Kolins and Ryan Sepka scored for the Rebels. Richards, Serka, Corey Baldwin, Brad Olson, Alex Lamb and Riley Brady-Springer contributed with one assist each. Olson finished the season as the top Rebels scorer with the league’s fifth-highest points total, scoring 22 goals and assisting on 38 others for 60 points.
n The North Delta Hawks were also eliminated in a sudden-death game, dropping an 8-6 decision to the Langley Warriors Monday night in Langley. North Delta had placed fourth in the South Conference with an 8-9-1 (won-lost-tied) record, two points back of the 9-8-1 Warriors.
The Hawks were paced offensively by Ethan Jones, who was 10th among the league’s top scorers with 19 goals and 31 assists for 50 points in 15 games played.
