Rebels ousted by 'Bellies
After posting an impressive fourth place finish over 11 weeks of league play, the Surrey Rebels were bounced from the West Coast Junior Lacrosse League (WCJLL) playoffs in just three days.
The Rebels, after losing the opening game of their best-of-three quarterfinal series with the New Westminster Salmonbellies, were eliminated Wednesday night at the Queen’s Park Arena with a 17-11 setback.
“The team played hard over the course of the season and deserved a better result than a first round exit from the playoffs,” said Rebels general manager Frank Geyer, noting the Junior B team put together a 14-5-1 (won-lost-tied) record for the team’s best ever showing in the regular season.
Curtis Callard, one of 10 Rebels in their last season of Junior B lacrosse, scored six goals and assisted on two others against the Salmonbellies. Sean O’Beirn with a pair, Matt Clarke, Cam Fielding and Chris Martin also found the net. Tommy Tran with three assists and Travis Voisey with a pair of helpers also contributed offensively.
- The Rebels placed three players among the top five in the WCJLL scoring race. Curtis Callard led all scorers with an even 100 points on 60 goals and 40 assists. Chris Martin was ranked third with 38 goals, 38 assists and 76 points, while Tommy Tran placed fifth with 21 goals and a league-best 42 assists for 63 points.
Surrey also boasts the leading goaltender in their lineup. Jeff Geyer topped all netminders over the course of the season with a .890 save percentage. Sheldon Wallace of Port Moody was the runnerup with a .873 mark.
