Rebels still alive in race for first place
The Surrey Rebels kept their hopes of a first place finish alive Friday night, stopping the North Shore Indians 10-5 in a B.C. Intermediate B Lacrosse League game at the Cloverdale Arena.
The win improved Surrey’s won-lost record to 11-6, two points back of the Richmond Roadrunners, the first place team in the South Conference with a 12-4 mark.
Richmond, losers of both games played last week, host the 13-3 Port Moody Thunder of the North Conference tonight and can clinch top spot with a win. Should the Roadrunners lose, Surrey can wrap up first place with a win next Friday over Richmond in the Cloverdale Arena, the last game of the regular season for both teams. Friday’s season finale is set for 8 p.m.
The Rebels fired 26 shots at the Indians goal in each of the first two periods last Friday, but led only by margins of 3-1 and 6-4 at the period breaks. Four Surrey goals on 13 third period shots put the game out of reach.
Ryan Sepka and Derk Kolins tallied three times each for the Rebels, both snipers reaching the 20-goal mark on the season.
Kolins also assisted on a pair of goals while Max Richards notched two goals and assisted on three others. Brad Olson had a five point night with a goal and four helpers. Thomas Henry rounded out the goal scoring, also collecting an assist.
Allan McLucas stopped 33 of 28 shots in the Rebels goal.
- The Surrey Rebels lost the first game of their best-of-three West Coast Junior League (WCJLL) quarterfinal series Monday night in Cloverdale, falling 5-2 to the New Westminster Salmonbellies.
The Rebels placed fourth in the final standings of the Junior B league with a 14-5-1 (won-lost-tied) record, five points ahead of the fifth place Salmonbellies (11-7-2).
The Salmonbellies opened the scoring seven minutes into Monday’s game, but a shorthanded marker by Tommy Tran tied the contest 1-1 after 20 minutes.
League scoring champion Curt Callard put Surrey up 2-1 after two periods, but the ‘Bellies started the third period with three goals in a three-minute span a 4-2 lead. After Callard was ejected following an altercation with a New Westminster opponent, the visitors closed out the scoring with an insurance goal.
Game two of the series is tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Queen’s Park Arena in New Westminster, with a third game Thursday if necessary at 8 p.m. in Cloverdale.
