Surrey’s Roy Mitchell is the newest BC Soccer Life Member.
Mitchell was nominated and selected by the BC Soccer Board of Directors based on many years of service. The board presented him with the prestigious Award at the 2009 BC Soccer Annual General Meeting held in June.
Mitchell first became involved in soccer in 1982 when he began coaching his son’s team. He remained with the team until it reached the under-19 division and then took on administrative duties within the Riverdale Soccer Club. When the team merged with Surrey Youth Soccer Association (SYSA) in 1988, Mitchell took on numerous positions including head coach, district representative and referee scheduler. By 1992 he became the SYSA chairperson.
Life membership is presented to individuals in recognition of extensive services and distinguished contributions to soccer in B.C.
Prior to receiving life membership, Mitchell was also the recipient in 2000 with an Award of Merit and was chosen as the Administrator of the Year in 2006.
