Canada Cup: Local teams heat up youth divisions
Delta Heat 91 player Brit Meyers avoids the tag at third by Quebec Rebelles player Leia Pengelley during Canada Cup Futures action at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Monday afternoon. Delta held Quebec scoreless in a 8-0 win.
Delta Heat teams competing at the 2009 Canada Cup International Fastpitch Futures Tournament World Junior tournament made their presence known on the first day of play Monday.
This is the 8th Futures tournament. It was created in 2002 for players 18-and-under to give Canadian players an opportunity to develop their skills playing against international competition, while demonstrating their talents to university coaches in the United States.
Playing in Pool B, Delta Heat 91 won the opening game 4-1 Monday morning against Fraser Valley Fusion and went on to trounce the Quebec Rebelles 8-0 later in the day. The Delta team was top of its pool as of Tuesday morning.
Delta Heat 90 played in Pool A, logging a 9-4 loss against the Worth Firecrackers Monday.
Both Delta teams and Surrey Storm were all scheduled to play Tuesday.
The Showcase tournament of 16-and-under players is in its 5th year and offers the similar opportunities to play against the world's best, or land a scholarship south of the border.
Surrey Storm 94, Surrey Storm 92, Delta Heat 93 and Delta Heat 94 are all represented in that division and like the Futures players, compete throughout the week at Softball City and Cloverdale Athletic Park. Championship games will be held Sunday at Softball City. Check www.canadacup.com for complete schedules.
