SPORTS BRIEFS: Teens bound for world cup

Two softball players from Surrey are on the Canadian team with will compete at the Easton Foundation Youth World Cup Aug. 10-16 in Prague, Czech Republic.

The tournament will include the best 16-year-old players from 12 countries, including Canada, China, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Russia and South Africa.

Chosen to the team are Olivia Zwick and Shanice Ketting-Olivier. The team was selected from three regional evaluation camps that were held in Oakville, Ontario, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Surrey over the past month.

Goalkeeper scores

Southridge School’s Sydney Kolysher will be one of nine new players to join the University of Connecticut’s women’s field hockey program this fall.

Kolysher, a goalkeeper, was named team MVP as a sophomore and junior at Southridge, and guided the school to the 2008 Fraser Valley Regional Championship.

She was the first team goalkeeper for Vancouver Meralomas Premier Division Team in the Vancouver Hockey Showcase.
