Eagles open BCHL season tonight
Published: September 05, 2008 11:00 AMAfter winning two of three exhibition games last month, the Surrey Eagles are ready to hit the ice for real today (Friday), when they host the division rival Langley Chiefs in their regular-season opener at South Surrey Arena.
The Eagles, coming off a season in which they went 33-23-1-3 but were bounced in the first round of B.C. Hockey League playoffs by the Powell River Kings, will also play the Chiefs in a return engagement Saturday night in Langley.
The two squads have already squared off twice this year, with the Eagles winning both pre-season tilts, 3-2 on Aug. 22 and 5-3 the following day.
Surrey’s roster will look markedly different than the one that finished last season, with newcomers like Spencer Bennett, Brennan Strang, Morgan MacLean and others, replacing outgoing veterans Max Grassi, Adam Basford, and Scott Knowles.
Twenty-year-old goaltender Tommy Tartaglione – who came to the Eagles late last season – is expected to get the bulk of the goaltending work, and will likely be between the pipes Friday, with 18-year-old Vinnie Lessard backing him up.
