Skating at his first National STARSkate Championship last month in Brampton, Ontario, Evan Lochhead exceeded expectations with a fourth place finish in the Bronze Men Triathlon Competition.

The North Surrey Skating Club (NSSC) member had two outstanding skates to start the competition, and was challenging for top spot after posting the best score in creative skills, and placing second in the interpretive skate.

“I was happy with the first two skates,” said Lochhead, 14. “But in the free skate, I made a couple of technical screw-ups, minor mistakes which really dinged me on points.”

In the end, Lochhead was just .07 points away from a bronze medal.

“I thought he would do all right, but he did better that I expected,” said NSSC head coach Elizabeth Roman. “Some of his competition was five years older than he was. They were 15-, 16- or 17-years-old, he just turned 14. The strength and power factors kicked in.”

The lone skater from B.C. at STARSkate, Lochhead’s strengths are creative skills and interpretive. His struggles in the free skate dropped him from contending for first place to finishing fourth.

“My first two are my better events, I usually do well in them,” he said. “In the free skate, I put my toe down and screwed up a jump, so I couldn’t finish the move.”
