Surrey man killed in targeted shooting

One man is dead and another is in serious condition following what police are calling a targeted shooting in Whalley late Thursday night.

The deceased has been identified as 21-year-old Gurpreet Sidhu. The other victim is Sidhu's friend, Opinder Sian, also 21.

The shooting occurred just before 11 p.m. outside a home at 12451 90 A Ave.

Police arrived on scene to find two men lying unconscious in the driveway, both with multiple gunshot wounds to the arms and chest.

Friends who were with the men at the time said as many as 12 shots were fired with an automatic rifle. They said they recognized the assailants and the attack might have been related to a school fight.

Sidhu, who lived in the home where the shooting occurred, was taken to hospital and later died. Sian is still in critical condition.

Speaking through a translator, Sidhu's grandfather, Avtar Sidhu, said the family is in shock.

He described his grandson as a good kid who was close to his family. Gurpreet Sidhu had just completed a real estate course.

He was inside the house hanging out with four or five of his friends Thursday night.

The boys stepped outside where somebody was apparently waiting and shot them, Sidhu's grandfather said.

On Friday afternoon, reporters were allowed into the house to speak to the grieving family, some of whom could be heard wailing upstairs.

Gurmeet Singh, who has lived next door to the Sidhus for two years, was in his basement when he heard the gunshots, came outside and saw the two men lying on the driveway.

Singh said the neighbourhood is safe.

"I've never seen this type of thing," he said. "This is the first time.

"Of course, if your neighbour is shot and he's dead, it scares me," he added. "It scares everybody."

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has taken charge of the investigation and is considering it a targeted shooting.

"At this point, I've not been made aware by investigators if these victims were known to police," Surrey RCMP Cpl. Jack Hundial said during a press conference Friday.

Police are currently seeking public assistance and witnesses.

Only seven hours later, there was a second shooting in Surrey.

At 6 a.m. Friday, Surrey RCMP received a report of shots fired in the 10600 block of 140 Street.

Investigators found several casings but no victim.

RCMP believe it was a drive-by shooting.

Hundial couldn't say whether the two incidents are related.

"At this point it's too early in the investigation to make any link to any other crime," Hundial said.

Anyone with information on any of the crimes is asked to contact the IHIT tip line at 1-877-543-9217 or the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502
