Two Surrey high school teachers have been recognized federally for inspiring their students and using technology to help them excel.

Sullivan Heights Secondary teacher Marc Pelech and Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary teacher Anissa Kermode were both honoured at a ceremony in Ottawa on Monday, which was World Teachers’ Day.

“A good teacher inspires a thirst for learning that lasts a lifetime,” said Prime Minister Stephen Harper. “The outstanding teachers honoured today are an inspiration to us all. They play an invaluable role in our children’s development and in the future success of our country.”

Pelech received a Certificate of Excellence and a cash award of $5,000, to be shared equally between himself and his school. Pelech teaches visual arts and media to students in Grades 8-12 and for years, has enabled students to produce murals and other public artwork for display. He's also established a comprehensive online gallery space to exhibit Surrey student art.

Kermode, who teaches career education, grad transitions and secondary school apprentice to Grade 8-12 students, was awarded a Certificate of Achievement and won a cash award of $1,000.

"She stands behind her students as they prepare to move on to higher eduction and the working world," read the federal honour, "giving them the skills and resources they need."

The funds awarded may be used for professional development, equipment, resource materials, website development, teaching aids, or other tools to improve teaching and student learning.

This year, 84 Prime Minister's Awards, meant to honour outstanding and innovative elementary and secondary school teachers in all disciplines, were presented to educators across Canada.

Award recipients are selected by parents and fellow educators who participate in national and regional selection committees. Winners were selected based on their innovative use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) in the classroom, the excellence and innovation of their teaching practices and their ability to achieve outstanding results with students.
