The hot dry weather has forced the closure of Delta's Watershed Park and the Delta Nature Reserve as of Friday afternoon.

A statement issued by the Corporation of Delta said the municipality was taking precautionary measures to minimize the risk of fires in municipal parks and wilderness areas.

Local residents and businesses are being asked to exercise "extreme caution" when operating machinery and vehicles in parks, wilderness areas and Burns Bog.

An open burning ban is in effect for all areas of Delta.

Delta fire and police, park patrols and municipal bylaw staff will be patrolling parks, beaches and Burns Bog access points to ensure there are no unauthorized activities taking place.

The public is urged to report any fires directly to 911 and any unauthorized activities to the Delta Police Department’s 24/7 non-emergency line at 604-946-4411.

The Fire Danger Rating across the Metro Vancouver area is rated high because of the current spell of hot, dry weather.
