Pay raise for trustees
The seven Surrey Board of Education members have voted themselves a $700 per year pay increase.
The raise puts the annual base rate at $28,700 per trustee, with the chairperson receiving an extra $3,000 per year and the vice-chair getting an additional $1,500.
The 2.4 per cent boost is equal to the cost-of-living increase in Greater Vancouver in the past year.
Trustees in Surrey, the largest school district in B.C., are the highest paid of the 13 Lower Mainland boards. However, Vancouver and Coquitlam have nine school trustees, resulting in a higher tab overall. While Surrey paid $197,000 in trustee honorariums last year, Coquitlam paid $231,000 and Vancouver doled out $219,190.
Trustee pay is reviewed annually. The pay increase took effect July 1.
