United Way kudos
Surrey school trustees have recognized the United Way of the Lower Mainland for its “outstanding and compassionate support” of Surrey kids.
While the organization has done an array of work in many areas supporting local students and neighbourhoods, perhaps the most visible and well-known program the United Way supports is the Community-Schools Partnership.
The program, which now runs at several Surrey schools, gives students and families support and resources that lead to healthier and happier children who are better prepared to learn.
Research has also been funded to help kids make the most of their after-school activities.
Individual schools have benefited from the United Way’s direct support of programs, aimed at assisting students. For example, the ETCETERA Preteen Youth Leadership Program provides a range of activities, leadership development and services to foster healthy attitudes towards education and staying in school.
Also, the Boys and Girls Club, a United Way program, has established its first after-school program in Surrey in a building at Old Yale Road Elementary with a grant from the United Way.
The monetary value of the United Way’s assistance to the school district amounts of hundreds of thousands of dollars annually.
