A Surrey man and a Delta resident have been charged in connection with a drug-ring bust in Bakersfield, Calif. that resulted in the seizure of $1.4 million in cash.
Thai Hoang, 32, of Surrey, appeared in U.S. federal court Monday morning, along with the three other men arrested with him, including Davindei Singh, 40, of Delta, and two men from California.
The arrests, which occurred last Friday, represented the culmination of an extensive investigation of a drug-trafficking organization that was buying cocaine in the U.S. and moving it to Canada for distribution.
According to a news release from the Kern County Sheriff's Office, the suspects told undercover officers they wished to purchase 85 kilograms of cocaine which they would then transport to Canada to sell for about twice the value.
Detectives showed the suspects the cocaine and several days later the men returned with about $1.4 million to purchase the drugs.
The cash was seized by the Drug Enforcement Administration and all four suspects were arrested on federal charges.
