Despite winning three elections and serving two terms in government, Surrey-Green Timbers NDP MLA Sue Hammell faces a nomination fight from within her party to run again in next spring's provincial election.
Ruby Bhandal, who is on leave from her job as constituency assistant to NDP MLA Jagrup Brar in neighbouring Panorama Ridge, is expected to challenge Hammell at the Sept. 20 nominating meeting.
"It is very unusual," Hammell said, but added she and other incumbent MLAs aren't exempt from nomination challenges.
"I know I've worked hard for my community for three terms," she said. "I'm proud of the work I've done."
Hammell said it's important for the party to bring past governing experience – as a minister in the 1990s she held portfolios including multiculturalism and immigration, public service, housing and women's equality – to demonstrate to voters it is ready to take power.
"What we need is some experience at the government table," she said.
Bhandal could not be reached for comment.
Brar, along with neighbouring NDP MLAs Harry Bains and Bruce Ralston, has endorsed Hammell in a letter.
"Sue’s a key member of our team and we support her," it says. "We need Sue there with us as we fight for the people of Surrey."
